Advancements in LED Technology

Last year, the creators of the blue LED light were honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics. According to the article, Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura all contributed to creating the blue light emitting diode (LED) in the early 1990s. Previously, red and green LEDs existed however it was the discovery of the blue light that made it possible to produce white light when placed alongside the red and green diodes.

LED bulbs offer an array of benefits over traditional incandescent bulbs, including being more energy efficient, lasting up to 30 years, and providing a brighter light. This makes LEDs ideal, not only for home and office use, but also for automotive applications and screens for mobile devices.

Now, the United Nations has declared 2015 The Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. This means that companies are working on developing new LED technologies and the global LED market is expected to experience growth in 2015. Additionally, new technology is helping to make the LED market more viable with bulbs like Cree has developed that allow for more efficient light conversion to further reduce the number of bulbs necessary.

Hello… and Goodbye!

Every once in a while, we like to introduce the people “behind the scenes” here at Bulb Direct. This month, we’re pleased to announce the retirement of two of our long-term employees.

Tom Taylor has been with the company for 26 years. In that time, he has seen three changes of ownership and location. He’s also witnessed significant changes in lighting technology and has enjoyed countless hours commuting to work with his wife, Connie, the current Operations Manager of Bulb Direct. “I first learned all about what it took to put out our catalog,” says Tom, “and over the years, I’ve done everything from purchasing to shipping to fixing the toilets.”

Tom has appreciated the family atmosphere at Bulb Direct, particularly its relationship with VESID, a service that provides employment to those with long-term disabilities. “We’ve been able to bring people into our shipping department and give them the chance they needed,” he says.

Mauri Ramell started at Bulb Direct 21 years ago in customer service, bringing with her a background in credit and collections. She has long served as the Accounts Receivable/Credit Manager.

Like most people here, she does more than one job. “Almost all of us cross-train. When someone is on vacation or leaves the company, everything will continue to run smoothly.” says Mauri. When she first started at Bulb Direct, she continued her habit of talking to herself. “I was laughed at a lot,” she says, “and I even got company awards for my chatter. I just tell people that if I ask a question of myself, I’ll get the answer I want!”

In retirement, Tom plans to tackle a growing Honey Do list, hang around his neighbor’s shop, and travel. Mauri will winter in Florida, enjoy grandchildren in the Rochester area during the warmer months, and spend more time boating.

Best of luck to you both, and thank you for so many years of dedicated service!
