Since 1970, Earth Day has brought a global focus to a wide variety of critical environmental issues. As always, one of the big features of Earth Day is educating people on how to reduce their energy usage, and everyone at Bulb Direct is excited to be celebrating on April 22.
We believe one of the best ways to celebrate Earth Day is to make sure your lighting choices, both at home and work, are environmentally friendly. (In fact, we’ve blogged previously about tips to save on lighting bills in your business, but here, we wanted to discuss two major points “greening” your lighting setup anywhere:
Go with Energy Efficient Bulbs
There are a number of different types of energy efficient bulbs. While they are all environmentally friendly, they do differ in “green levels.”
CFLs and fluorescents are both good choices, but the best choice has to be LEDs. Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs combine long life, exceptional energy savings, and natural light. In addition, unlike CFLs, LEDs do not contain mercury.
Despite higher initial costs, LEDs will save you money over time, and they are the greenest bulbs available. (We broke down some facts and figures on energy-efficient bulbs in another one of our blog posts.)
Controlling Your Lights
It may not seem like a big deal to forget to flick a switch, but leaving lights on both at home and at work can be costly and hurt the environment.
Thankfully, modern technology has an answer: New automation products allow you to control all sorts of lighting and electronics remotely. Whether from your smartphone, tablet, or a computer, you can turn lights on and off or even set a detailed schedule to maximize your power usage.
